Be Engaged and Involved
Video Transcribed: How do you prove you’re a good dad in court? My name is Brian L. Jackson. I’m a Tulsa father’s rights attorney here with Dads.Law where fathers are not disposable. I want to talk about a really simple question. How do you prove you’re a good dad? She says that you aren’t that involved. You know you are. How do you prove it?
A couple of things that are good evidence that demonstrates that you’re engaged and involved. Obviously, photographs. Lots of photographs showing you doing different things with the kids. That’s a good one. Be able to talk about what is the child’s daily routine like. What responsibilities have you assumed? How often? You might bring in a witness. If the kid’s in school, how often have you met with the teacher? Bring the teacher in. If you’re going to a lot of parent-teacher conferences, the teacher will know your name. They’ll be able to testify that you show up and you’re engaged.
Same thing with other people in the kid’s life. For example, if they attend a church group, the youth group leader, if they know you on a first-name basis, that’s good. There are coaches, doctors, dentists, and things like that. You can bring those witnesses in to say, “No, this guy’s really engaged.” You might also bring in receipts and other financial records to show things you’ve done to support the child. If you’re the one that took the kid shopping for clothes, then the receipts tend to back that up. That kind of thing shows you’re engaged. You’re doing all the right things.
Grades are important. If the child’s been in your care a chunk of the time, what do their grades look like? How are they doing in their various extracurricular activities? These are all things that a court would look at to determine whether are you doing the job or are you not doing the job. Certainly, if you can show a bunch of witnesses, and create a good list of exhibits showing you doing various things with the child, it’s going to be very hard for mom to convince a judge that you’re not that engaged. You’re not that involved. That she’s the one that’s been doing everything.
That’s some examples of how you might demonstrate, no, really, I’m engaged. I’m a good dad. If you have questions about that or you’re dealing with a situation where you are fighting over child custody, then you need a good attorney. One place you can find a good men’s family law attorney in Oklahoma is at Dads.Law where fathers are not disposable.
