Seek Legal Counsel Immediately
Hi, I’m Tulsa Dads.Law attorney Clint Hastings. I practice here in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and I focus on fathers’ rights.
Today is the third part of our video series on what to do if DHS shows up at your door or calls you about allegations involving your child. In this video, I want to focus on what you should do if you believe the allegations are serious — and especially if DHS begins discussing removing your child from your home, placing them with a relative, or even putting them in foster care under what’s called a deprived action.
Seek Legal Guidance for Protection
Let me be clear: if you’re in that situation, you need to contact an attorney immediately. Do not try to handle it alone. At this stage, it’s critical to have legal guidance to understand the allegations, protect your rights, and avoid saying anything that could be used against you, whether in a criminal case or a deprived action.
Even if you’ve already started speaking with DHS and things begin to sound serious, you still have the right to pause and request legal counsel. If you’re unsure about the severity of the situation, it’s always better to stop the conversation and say, “I want to cooperate, but I need to speak with an attorney first.”
Stand Firm and Protect Your Rights
No matter how much pressure is applied or how casual the conversation seems, stand firm and politely decline to continue without legal representation. This is your child, your family, and your future. Don’t take chances.
