Understanding the Difference Between Monitored and Supervised Visitation
Hi, I’m Tulsa Dads.Law attorney Clint Hastings. I practice here in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and I focus on fathers’ rights.
I get this question a lot—often because a dad has a friend who was ordered to monitored visitation, while he himself was ordered to supervised visitation.
Monitored Visitation
Monitored visitation means a supervisor—either professional or agreed upon—checks in randomly during your visitation time. For example, if you have an overnight or weekend visit, the monitor may stop by once or twice, observe for a short while, talk with you and the kids, and ensure everything is going well.
Monitored visits usually come after a period of supervised visits—often in cases involving past substance abuse issues. It’s a kind of “step-down” approach where you’re no longer under constant watch but still being checked in on.
Supervised Visitation
In short, supervised visitation means that either a professional supervisor or a mutually agreed-upon third party is physically present for the entire duration of your visitation with your children.
If the monitor is a professional, they’ll typically write visit reports, just like they would during supervised visitation. These reports may include observations about the interaction and any specific concerns.
