Understanding Supervised Visitation
Hi, I’m Tulsa Dads.Law attorney Clint Hastings here in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and I focus on fathers’ rights. The answer to that can take a couple of different forms. Supervised visits mean that some other party is literally present and observing you during your entire visitation time with your children.
Types of Supervised Visitation
Sometimes, this is done by a professional—what we call professionally supervised visits. These can cost anywhere from $40 to $50 an hour, sometimes even up to $100 or more. But generally, $40 to $50 per hour is what you’ll be looking at, and that’s typically sufficient. There are several local providers—some are individuals, and others are companies with multiple supervisors. We work with a few regularly, but there are plenty of options out there.
The other type of supervised visitation is when the parties agree on a mutual third party to supervise. That person could be your mother, her mother, your brother, an uncle, aunt, or even a mutual friend. They stay and watch the visit the entire time.
Differences Between Types of Supervised Visitation
The main difference between the two is that professionally supervised visits include documentation—the professional writes a report that can be shared with the attorneys and the court if needed. Informal third-party supervision, on the other hand, doesn’t involve any formal reporting.
That’s the basic overview of what supervised visitation means. In another video or two, I’ll go over when you should agree to supervised visits, when you might want to fight it, and what the parameters should look like.
