Understanding Judicial Order of Proper Conduct in Custody Cases
Hi, I’m Clint Hastings, a Tulsa Dads.Law attorney here in Tulsa, Oklahoma and I focus on father’s rights.
A viewer recently asked: What is a JOPC, or Judicial Order of Proper Conduct? In short, it’s a court order that sets ground rules for how parents should behave toward each other and their children during a divorce. Sometimes, these orders remain in place even after the divorce is final.
Key Instructions in a Judicial Order of Proper Conduct
The terms vary by county, but they often include instructions like: Don’t use your children to send messages to the other parent, don’t speak negatively about the other parent in front of your kids, don’t deny visitation without good cause, don’t introduce new romantic partners during the divorce—unless it’s a serious relationship and the other parent has been notified or approved terms (like background checks), ensure your children are shielded from adult conflict and stress.
These orders are meant to protect kids and keep parents focused on what’s best for them. Judges can order them based on allegations or concerns—or attorneys can request them. In some divorces, they’re issued early; in others, they’re added later—or not at all.
