Understanding the Parenting Plan Conference
Hi, I’m Clint Hastings. I’m a Tulsa family law attorney here in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and I focus on fathers’ rights. A viewer recently asked, “What is a Parenting Plan Conference?” — also known as a PPC. That’s a common early step in many Oklahoma divorce and custody cases. A PPC is considered a non-adversarial court setting. You and your co-parent will appear before a judge who gives a brief talk about how to handle the divorce in a way that protects your kids—especially when emotions are high early in the case.
You’ll also be instructed to attend a four-hour class called Helping Children Cope with Divorce, which costs about $55. Every parent must take it. The goal is to help you avoid behaviors—intentional or not—that can negatively affect your children. At the PPC, you’ll get a quick overview from state child support staff about how child support is calculated. Then your attorneys may try to work out a temporary order agreement—covering things like visitation, support, and property—until a more formal hearing can be scheduled.
Benefits of Attending the PPC
Speaking of hearings, there’s a new Oklahoma law that requires temporary orders to be scheduled within 30 days—or 10 days if there are domestic violence or child abuse allegations. But courts, especially in Tulsa County, are still catching up to that timeline, and you might be asked to waive the deadline if your case isn’t urgent. As far as preparing for the PPC, there’s not much you have to do. But if you want to make progress on temporary orders, talk to your attorney in advance. Often, they’ll need to speak with the other side’s lawyer before the PPC to work toward a resolution.
Hope that helps clear things up. If you have questions or need legal help, give us a call. I’m Tulsa Dads.Law attorney Clint Hastings. We’re happy to talk through your case.
