The Impact of Marriage on Father’s Rights
Hello, my name is Brian L. Jackson. I’m a Tulsa father’s rights attorney here with Dads.Law, where fathers are not disposable. We’re on location, this is the Arkansas River behind me and the PSO power plant. I thought you guys might like a change of scenery.
So I wanted to talk to you guys today about the effect that getting married has on your rights as a father. If you just found out that your child’s mother’s pregnant, or if you literally just had a kid. This is a kind of a sensitive topic because there’s other considerations that go into whether or not you want to get married, even just legal ones.
And I never advise somebody to get into a relationship that’s otherwise not good for them, that can ultimately end badly. However, you should be aware that if you are married within this year of the birth of your child or before the child comes on the scene, you would be presumed a father as a married husband. And the advantage of that is that unlike an unmarried father, because you’re presumed you have the same rights as the mother.
Considering Marriage in Relation to Father’s Rights
I mean, if you’re in a serious relationship, and you know, there’s a either planned or unplanned pregnancy, and you were thinking marriage might be something to go for anyway, then maybe the time has come to set a date. But again, I think that’s a complicated consideration that implicates more than just legal issues. And it’s something to talk about, talk to somebody you trust about. Nevertheless, it is something to be aware of.
If you have questions about where you stand, say that you did have a kid right before you got married, or say your significant other is pregnant now, you need good legal advice. One place you can find good legal advice is Dads.Law, where fathers are not disposable.
