Parental Involvement in Medical Care and Custody
Hi, I’m Clint Hastings, a Tulsa Dads.Law attorney here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Today, we’re continuing our video series on parental fitness and the custody factors judges look at—and the same ones I counsel clients to prepare for during divorce.
These videos are meant to give you a common-sense overview of the basics. Of course, every case is different, and if you need specific advice, we’re happy to give a more detailed consultation once we’re working on your case.
Importance of Medical and Dental Involvement
Today’s focus is on medical and dental involvement. That includes physical health care, dental visits, and mental health counseling.
A lot of dads I talk to haven’t been very involved in this area—maybe because of demanding work schedules or long-standing routines where Mom handled most appointments. That’s understandable, but it will be a factor in your custody case.
Steps to Take for Better Involvement
Take an honest look at your past involvement and be ready to explain it. Start participating now. If the divorce is pending, make every effort to attend your child’s appointments—even if Mom has temporary custody. Access medical portals and read the records. Document your involvement.
If your child is in therapy, be involved in the way the therapist recommends. If you’re unsure whether your child needs therapy, err on the side of caution. Keep records and be specific about your involvement.
