Don’t Let The Mother Cancel Visitations Easily
So why are you letting the mother of your child cancel visitations just because the child is sick?
Hi, I’m Tulsa Dads.Law attorney Clint Hastings. I practice here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I focus on fathers’ rights, and this is my 25th year in practice.
Step Up and Take Charge
Let’s talk about this, guys. Are you accepting it because the mother has usually been the one to care for the child when they’re sick? Well, guess what—you should step up and do it yourself. You’re just as capable. You can look up symptoms online just like mom can. You can take the child to urgent care, to the ER if necessary, and you can schedule doctor’s appointments.
If your child isn’t too sick to travel back and forth, you should still insist on exercising your visitation and take care of your child during your time. That’s part of parenting. That’s part of the experience. So don’t fall into the routine—or the trap—of automatically canceling visits whenever your child is sick.
Stand Firm
Stand firm. If she refuses to comply, you may have grounds to argue it’s an unreasonable denial of visitation and file a motion to enforce. Now, if the child is truly very ill and can’t make the trip, that will likely be considered reasonable and not a denial.
