Should You Negotiate With Your Spouse or Mother of Your Child Without an Attorney?
Hi, I’m Tulsa father’s right attorney Clint Hastings. Today I’m going to answer the question, should you negotiate by yourself with your wife or the mother of your child if it’s a paternity case? And my answer is no, I would not recommend you do that.
First of all, there’s a lot of discomfort in doing so, and things can get touchy quickly if there’s any raw emotions still at work, and there usually are. And you don’t know where to navigate the conversation and what little things may benefit you the most legally, so that’s why I say I do not recommend you do it.
The Importance of Legal Representation in Negotiations
However, there are people that do it, and do it successfully, and then come to us with a full agreement. Or we might be halfway in a case, and the parties negotiate something without the attorneys. But it usually turns out bad, creating sometimes more animosity because of how it’s asked. Someone may even give answers like, I’m not going to do that and then they go into five reasons why you’re a terrible person and why they’re not going to do whatever you requested. So, it’s just not a good idea. In another video, I’m going to answer the question, can your lawyer tell you what to say to your ex in such a negotiation? We’ll get to that answer in the next video.
